Denise Contreras
Bronx, NY
I began running after losing both my parents during the pandemic, finding healing and hope with the Boogie Down Bronx Runners. What started as a Tuesday run became a lifeline of community, movement, and support carrying me through grief and life with Lupus. Since then, I've run my first 10-miler, completed The 2023 NYC Marathon and Berlin in 2025, plus many other runs and now I'm stepping into the challenge of the TSP Ultra Marathon.
I decided to run The Speed Project as a way to challenge myself and move beyond my comfort zone. I hope my journey encourages other women to believe in their strength and feel empowered to step into endurance sports.
Why The Speed Project
The Speed Project represents pushing past my limits and trusting the power of teamwork along the way. I'm excited to be part of this team because of the shared grit, support, and energy that make something this challenging feel truly meaningful.
Building Community
Running has connected me to a community that shows up with support, encouragement, and shared purpose. Through this experience, I want to help build a space where women feel empowered, welcomed, and motivated to chase hard goals together.

When it gets tough, I remind myself why I started and lean on the strength and love of the community that runs beside me and also let good music push me forward.
